Extreme Heat and Tropical Storm Bertha Impacts

Dangerous heat will expand from the Gulf Coast into the Southern Plains and Desert Southwest through week's end. Additional extreme heat impacting the Pacific Northwest will shift to the northern Plains by the weekend. Some storms may be strong to briefly severe, with damaging wind gusts, hail, and brief downpours within the main rain core. Cloud-to-ground lightning associated with thunderstorms may result in new fire starts. Red Flag Warnings have been issued for Southern Deschutes National Forest, Central Mountains of Oregon, and the Southern Blue Mountains of Oregon. Valid from 11 AM through 11 PM Today.

A Heat Advisory remains in effect through 9 PM Thursday, as hot afternoon temperatures are followed by limited cooling overnight. These conditions combined, limit the amount of recovery a body gets and impact health. Smoke from local fires can affect how hot the afternoons can get, but also limit the overnight cooling by holding in the heat. Today is expected to be the hottest day, with Major HeatRisk across the Columbia Basin, Yakima Valley and portions of the Gorge and Blue Mountain Foothills. Thursday will also see widespread moderate HeatRisk and locally major HeatRisk, mainly across the Columbia Basin.
