October 5th - 9th...A strong upper level area of low pressure across the Lower Mississippi Valley gradually moved northeast. The associated surface low pressure area over the same area moved east-northeast and reformed off the Carolina coast. This multi-day event produced very heavy rainfall across northeast Georgia, the Upstate and Mountains of South Carolina and western North Carolina. Rainfall amounts ranged from 1 to 2 inches across the central-southern Midlands and CSRA. Higher amounts fell to the northwest of the region across the Upstate. Rainfall amounts averaged between 2 and 5 inches with some areas receiving from 5 to 9 inches along the Savannah River. This produced some high flows and minor river flooding along the Saluda River at Chappells and along the Congaree River downstream to the confluence of the Wateree River. The Saluda River at Chappells crested at 19.88 feet on the late evening of the 9th. Flood stage is 14.0 feet. The Congaree at Columbia and downstream to the Congaree National Park did not reach flood stage, but the river ran high for several days. The Congaree River at Columbia crested at 9.23 feet on the early morning hours of the 9th. Advisory Stage is 10.0 feet and Flood Stage is 19.0 feet. The Congaree River at Carolina Eastman crested at 113.5 feet on the afternoon of the 9th, flood stage is 115.0 feet on the afternoon of the 9th. The Congaree River at Gadsden-Congaree National Park crested at 13.38 feet on the afternoon of the 9th, flood stage is 15.0 feet. October 18th...Cold Canadian high pressure settled in across the Midlands and Central Savannah River Area behind a cold front. This produced some chilly morning temperatures that fell into the middle to upper 30s. There were a couple of isolated reports of frost.
