Severe Thunderstorms in the Northeast and Northern Plains; Critical Fire Weather in the West

Scattered severe thunderstorms capable of damaging wind gusts and hail are forecast across the Northeast U.S. and North Dakota today. Heavy to excessive rainfall is possible over eastern New Mexico into western Texas and over the western Florida peninsula today. A low pressure system has pushed into the western Gulf of Alaska impacting the weather in most of Southwest and Southcentral Alaska. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Kuskokwim Delta for blowing snow. Expect visibilities as low as ½ mile with 2-5 inches of snow accumulation. In Southcentral Alaska, a wintry mix of precipitation is at play with above freezing temperatures making their way into the area. In addition to the warm and moist air, gusty winds are in the forecast with speeds as high as 70 mph in along Turnagain Arm and Portage Valley.
