2008 Valentine's Day Winter Storm

What Happened?Snowfall from February 14, 2008 On Valentine's Day morning, a stationary front was situated from southeast Nebraskainto northeast Wisconsin.  As warm and moist air was lifted over this front a very narrow band (only about 30 to 50 miles wide) of heavy snow developed along the Minnesota/Iowa border and into southwest and central Wisconsin.  These types of snow bands are on the lower end of the spectrum as far as predictability, due to their areal coverage.   Snowfall rates were on the range of 1 to 2 inches an hour (indicated by purple and white colors in the two hour radar loop below).  Snowfall rates in these ranges are capable of bringing all travel to a standstill.  This band of snow produced accumulations of 7 to 11 inches in a very narrow area (around 30 miles wide) from near Cresco, IA (Howard County) east northeast to Friendship, WI (Adams County).  Surrounding the heavy snow accumulations, general amounts of 4 to 7 inches fell, although this area was not much wider.  During the afternoon, the band of snow began to move slowly southeast as the stationary front became a cold front.  Overall, the snow was only seen along a corridor of approximately 75 miles wide, with a very tight gradient between heavy snow accumulations and no snow.
