Western New York Weather History

FEBRUARY 6

1978

The heaviest snow of the month occurred on the 6th and 7th. A little over 8 inches was recorded at the Buffalo Airport with a foot or more in many western New York counties. Orleans county was the hardest hit with up to 20 inches. Traffic was slowed throughout the area and conditions were reported as extremely hazardous in counties near Lake Ontario.

1988

The record breaking snowfall on the 6th caused blizzard like conditions across the Niagara Frontier paralyzing traffic and resulting in scores of automobile accidents.
The storm dropped 10.1 inches of snow at the Greater Buffalo International Airport - breaking the February 6th record of 7.2 inches set in 1911. The Airport closed intermittently through the day as a 10 mile wide band of lake effect snow stalled over Buffalo and its eastern suburbs, closing roadways and sending stranded motorists to temporary shelters. State police reported more than 30 accidents on the Niagara Thruway and at least 40 accidents - including a chain reaction crash involving 35 to 50 vehicles - along the mainline Thruway. Winds gusting to 43 mph combined with temperatures in the single numbers to produce wind chills in the extreme cold range. At the height of the storm the lake effect squall was dumping snow at the rate of three inches per hour. Snow totals ranged from 12 inches in Depew to 5 inches in Williamsville. The Skyway, Fuhrman Boulevard and Father Baker Bridge were closed as well as portions of the N.Y.S. Thruway through early evening.

1996

A lake effect snow band moved south over Northern Cayuga and Oswego counties around midnight dropping heavy snow overnight. Palermo reported 15", West Monroe and Hastings 14", and Fairhaven received 6".
