JANUARY 14 1950 Over $2,000,000 in property damage was estimated and 8 injuries occurred locally during a windstorm which swept over the entire western New York area. A section of Woodlawn was flooded by the rise of Lake Erie. Average wind velocity was 34.1 mph from the southwest although the wind was between 35 and 50 mph from midnight until 4am. The fastest mile was 91 mph from the southwest.
Schools were closed and some highways temporarily blocked because of the snowstorm. The 7.8 inches of snow at the Buffalo Airport on this date was the greatest snowfall in a 24 hour period for the month of January 1963. Although it snowed each hour for the day the bulk of the snowfall (6.5 inches) fell between 7am and 7pm. Average wind was 22 mph from the southwest, fastest mile 33 mph from the west, peak gust 43 mph from the southwest at 1700 est. 1992 A strong low pressure system moved northeast from the mid-Mississippi Valley across New York to Maine. Circulation around the low brought strong gusty winds to the area. Winds frequently gusted over 50 mph, and combined with falling snow and snow on the ground to produce whiteouts. Numerous automobile accidents were reported due to the hazardous driving conditions. Wind gusts included 59 mph at Elmira, 58 mph at Watertown and Syracuse, 54 mph at Rochester, 46 mph at Dunkirk, and 45 mph at Buffalo. 2003 14TH-15TH... A weak low approached from the upper Great Lakes and slowly passed to our north during Wednesday the 15th. Lake effect snows began to develop off Lake Erie during the evening hours of the 14th. The snows did not extend too far inland in a weak westerly flow however along the lakeshore and adjacent ridges of southern Erie and Chautauqua counties up to ten inches fell by daybreak. Off Lake Ontario , the wind flow became more aligned during the morning of the 15th and a band of snow set up over Oswego county. Almost two feet of snow fell in the City of Oswego in less than nine hours during the day. Winds increased during the day allowing the band to extend in to southern Lewis county. Snowfall reports received off Lake Erie : Sinclairville 14"; Perrysburg 11"; Boston , Arkwright, and Colden 10"; and Sherman 9". Off Lake Ontario : West Leyden 40"; North Osceola 29"; Scriba 17"; Highmarket 16"; and Sandy Creek 14". 2007 14th-15th...Low pressure centered over southern Indiana tracked northeast and spread freezing rain across the area. Up to a half-inch of ice accumulated on trees and wires. The weight brought down some power lines with outages scattered throughout the area. Heavy icing was reported in Fulton, Warsaw, Livonia, Geneva, Henderson and North Osceola.
