Western New York Weather History

JANUARY 15

1993

A southwest flow of cold air across the open waters of Lake Erie produced localized snow squalls over parts of the Central Western Counties just south and east of Metro Buffalo. Six to eight inches of snow fell in six hours over parts of West Seneca, Orchard Park, Lancaster and Alden.

1994

A northwest flow of arctic air produced snow squalls over Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties. Localized snowfall amounts of between six and nine inches fell in the snow squall.

1998

A weak frontal system stalled across the area and brought heavy snows to the northern sections of the region. The heaviest snow extended from Niagara and Orleans counties across Lake Ontario to Jefferson and Lewis counties. Six to eight inches of snow fell in the above mentioned areas with up to six inches in the Buffalo and Rochester metro areas. Amounts dropped off markedly to the south because of a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

1999

Low pressure moved to the south of the area and produced a general heavy snowfall across the region. The heavy, wet snow combined with freezing rain across the Southern Tier. The heavy snows again resulted in traffic tie-ups and school closings. Visibilities were reduced and roads became treacherous from the ice mix of snow and sleet. A general snowfall of six to nine inches fell across the entire area. This latest bout only added to the harsh winter conditions across the region. Several counties in the area were declared disaster areas by the State and Federal government.

2000

15TH-16TH…A westerly flow across Lake Ontario produced a lake effect snow band which only lasted for about six to eight hours over Lewis and Oswego counties. Snowfall amounts included 8" at Highmarket and 11" at Redfield.

2005

A westerly flow of cold air crossing Lake Ontario resulted in a single lake effect snow squall across parts of the eastern Lake Ontario region of New York. The band remained fairly stationary from early morning through midday before weakening and lifting north during the afternoon. Snowfall reports included Oswego and Lewis Counties: Lacona 19"; Pulaski 16"; Sandy Creek 10", and North Osceola and Hooker 5".
