JULY 5

1985

Thunderstorms on the 5th and 6th produced heavy rain, high winds, and marble sized hail. More than an inch of rain fell in twenty minutes in some parts of the Southtowns causing localized flooding. Power outages due to downed lines also resulted. Reports included: power outages in Derby, Lakewood, Silver Creek to Sheridan, Hamburg, West Seneca, and Lancaster. Hail was reported in Evans, Hamburg, Chautauqua township and Lancaster.

1992

Thunderstorms over Niagara county produced hail up to the size of golfballs which damaged crops. The hardest hit farms were in the area of Cambria, Lewiston, and Ransomville. Damage was estimated to be in the range of thousands of dollars. Grapes and apples were severely damaged with grapes torn from their clusters and apples cut and bruised. These fruits which would normally be sold as fresh had to be sold for processing at a reduced price. Vegetable crops were completely defoliated in some spots.

1995

Thunderstorms developed in a moist, unstable atmosphere and produced damaging winds and large hail. The winds downed trees and power lines in Dunkirk, Otto, Clarence, Avon and Conesus Lake. Scattered power outages resulted. Hail up to an inch in diameter was reported in Avon. The torrential rains of the thunderstorms resulted in localized poor drainage flooding.

1999

A severe thunderstorm developed over eastern Lake Ontario and moved across Jefferson and Lewis counties during the late afternoon hours. The thunderstorm produced damaging winds which downed trees and power lines in Alexandria Bay, Harrisville and Diana. The downed tree limbs blocked some roads.
