JULY 4 1983 A cold front with some damaging winds, flashes of lightning, and scattered areas of heavy rainfall moved through the Buffalo area during the evening hours dropping the temperature fourteen degrees in two hours. The storms brought hail to Orchard Park, winds gusting to 50 mph, and an unconfirmed report of a funnel cloud in Lancaster. 1990 A strong cold front moved quickly across western and central New York during the late evening and early morning hours of the 4th and 5th. The front was accompanied by severe thunderstorms which downed trees and power lines. Falling trees and limbs damaged several homes and automobiles. Lightning reportedly started a few house fires. Wind damage was reported from: Albion, Orleans county; East Pittsford, Monroe county; Wolcott and Sodus, Wayne county; Canandaigua, Ontario county; Ontario and Red Creed, Wayne county; Middlebury and Warsaw, Wyoming county; Geneseo, Livingston county; and North Harmony, Lakewood and Busti, Chautauqua county. 2001 A Boy Scout leader and scout were struck by lightning while target shooting in Phelps in Ontario county. Both suffered burns and the young scout had to be resuscitated when he stopped breathing. A third scout, standing nearby, was also injured by the near lightning strike. 2003 Thunderstorms developed during the late afternoon hours in a warm, moist, unstable flow. A few of these storms reached severe limits producing damaging winds that downed trees and power lines in East Otto, Belfast, and Mexico. |
