Western New York Weather History
JUNE 17
1970 A series of thunderstorms occurred in the evening. Heaviest apparently over Niagara county. There were scattered power outages. Drenching rains accompanied these storms especially in Lockport where streets were briefly flooded. Lightning struck four homes and a church in Amherst but damage was light.
During the early evening heavy thunderstorms developed over extreme western New York. Half inch diameter hail was reported in Kenmore new York and one inch hail at Bennington. A tornado was reported by the public near Strykersville in western Wyoming county. 1984 Moderate to heavy rain fell over the western southern tier and Niagara frontier. Rainfall amounts of over three inches occurred in Chautauqua and Erie counties. Many small streams overflowed their banks and Chautauqua Lake was above flood stage. In Chautauqua county, five bridges were washed out. 2002 A line of thunderstorms developed over southwest Niagara and northern Erie counties with successive training on either side of Tonawanda Creek. Two inches of rain fell in less than an hour and a nursing home was evacuated as a precaution as clogged drains held the heavy rains on the building rooftop. Dozens of roads were under water. Pea- to nickel-sized hail covered the ground in North Tonawanda. The thunderstorms produced hail up to 1" in diameter.
