Western New York Weather History
MARCH 5
1976 Thunderstorms occurred during the morning causing minor property damage in the town of Hanover and at Sinclairville, both in Chautauqua county. Strong gusty winds also caused damage to trees and power lines. High water in Ellicott Creek caused widespread street and basement flooding in sections of the Town of Amherst. It resulted mainly from backed up storm sewers that could not empty properly into the creek due to high creek levels. Parts of Jamestown were flooded by the Chadakoin river which empties Chautauqua Lake. The lake itself was three feet over flood stage which was the highest since 1936. Tonawanda creek spilled over its banks into low lying areas between Batavia and the Tonawandas causing estimated damages about $900,000. 1996 A late season winter storm dumped six to ten inches of heavy, wet snow across portions of the Niagara Frontier and western Finger Lakes. Specific totals included: North Tonawanda 10", Lyndonville 8", Rochester 9", Sodus 6", Fairhaven 6", Buffalo 8", Darien 8", and Avon 8". 2001 A complex low pressure system that plagued the Northeast brought significant snowfall to western and central New York. The snow in western New York came in two phases from Sunday night to early Monday morning (4th-5th) and again Monday night to Tuesday morning (5th-6th). The heaviest snow fell during the first period and was associated with upper level energy, while the second snow period resulted from the western fringe of a large coastal storm south of New England. East of Lake Ontario, the snow was nearly continuous from late Monday night through Tuesday morning (4th-6th). Snowfall totals for the 48-hour event were generally between 12-18" from the Genesee Valley eastward and 8-12" across far western New York.
