1998 Strong thunderstorms raced across the Genesee Valley, the Finger Lakes and eastern Lake Ontario region during the late morning and early afternoon hours. The storms produced high winds, very heavy rain and hail up to one inch in diameter. Three-quarter inch hail was reported in Canaseraga, Allegany county, and Newark, Wayne county while one-inch hail fell in Attica, Wyoming county. The storms also caused scattered power outages throughout the counties. Most damage consisted of downed trees and power lines, though in Sodus and Warsaw automobiles were damaged by falling trees. In Gainseville, Wyoming county, a 45 year old man was injured when he was struck by lightning while attempting to get from his tractor to his car during the storm. He was treated and released from a local hospital. 2002 Thunderstorms developed in warm, moist, unstable air during the afternoon and evening hours downing trees and power lines. Up to 5000 homes were without power at the peak of the storm. Hail up to 1 inch in diameter was reported in Perry, Wyoming county. The training thunderstorms dropped four to six inches of rain in two to three hours in a localized area from Phelps to Newark. A State of Emergency was declared that was declared in Newark remained in effect for a week with most schools and businesses closed during that time. Nearly 300 basements were flooded and several roads covered with up to a foot of water remained closed for several days.
