Heavy Rainfall and Severe Thunderstorm Threats for the Plains and Southeast

A frontal boundary extending from the western High Plains to the Southeast will focus additional showers and thunderstorms this weekend. Some of these storms may become severe, alongside frequent lightning, and isolated instances of flash flooding. OCTOBER 18

 

1967 

An inch and a half of rain fell at the Airport with 1.08 inches on the 18th. Up to four inches of snow were reported in the hills of Cattaraugus county on the 19th.

1981 

A windstorm with gusts to 56 mph at the Buffalo airport downed power lines. 6500 homes lost power. Some downed trees caused extensive damage. Beach erosion on the east shore of Lake Erie was a problem.

1988 

A cold front crossed western New York with winds gusting over 50 mph bringing down power lines and triggering blackouts throughout the area. A peak gust of 53 mph was recorded at the Buffalo Airport and a gust of 54 was logged at the Niagara Falls Airport. The system brought sustained winds of 30 mph. Power lines were reported down throughout western new York. About 8000 customers were without power. In Kenmore, a large willow tree was blown over onto a truck. The front was accompanied by thunderstorms which dumped heavy rain across the southern tier where flooded roads and basements were reported.

1990

A deep low pressure system pushed a strong cold front across western New York producing high winds over the Niagara Frontier and western southern tier. Local police authorities reported large trees and numerous power lines downed. The local power company reported nearly 4000 customers were affected by power failures.
