SEPTEMBER 27

1967

Sept 27-29th...from 8pm of the 27th through 8pm of the 28th, 3.63 inches of rain was recorded at the Buffalo Airport..a new September record. Total rainfall for this storm from 2pm of the 27th to 2am of the 29th was 4.40 inches. Rainfall amounts totaled from four to six inches in many communities. The Allegany river reached its fourth highest flood level of record at Salamanca where 17 bridges and culverts, including a large railroad bridge, were washed out. There were two deaths due to flooded roads. Many industries in the southern tier were forced to close. Many homes were flooded and utilities knocked out. Damage estimates of several million dollars were reported. A rapid moving flood crest swept sunset bay at the mouth of Cattaraugus Creek and about 150 pleasure boats were swept out into Lake Erie.

1992

A fast-moving cold front crossed the area and winds funneled along Lake Erie resulting in damaging winds during the afternoon hours. Winds gusted to 55 MPH at the Buffalo Airport with sustained winds between 25 and 30 MPH for six hours. The strong winds downed trees and power lines. Nearly 4000 customers in the Buffalo metropolitan area were without power for nearly two hours.

1998

Some of the most intense thunderstorms in years moved across the Niagara Peninsula into Niagara, Erie, and Orleans counties. The thunderstorms produced hail up to four inches in diameter that broke numerous windows and windshields. Hundreds of cars were dented with damages of up to a couple of thousand dollars each. Although the storms were not accompanied by strong winds, the torrential rains produced resulted in visibilities near zero at times. After the storms, lawns and streets were covered white with hailstones. In Niagara Falls, a greenhouse was 98% destroyed as hailstones smashed the glass panes. The large hailstones damaged apple crops in Niagara and Orleans counties which had already been hurt by a windstorm earlier in the month.
