Winter Weather Brings Dangerous Travel Conditions Across the Northern U.S.

Heavy lake effect snow will persist downwind of the Great Lakes through early Saturday. Snow squalls with heavy snow and gusty winds will create dangerous travel in the Interior Northeast due to low visibility and slippery roads. The information provided below is brought to you by the NWS office in Buffalo, NY.  All of these fantastic images have been accessed from the Naval Research Laboratory, MODIS Today, or NOAA CoastWatch.

The page tracks the seasonal development of ice cover on the eastern Great Lakes.  Meteorologists monitor ice conditions for several reason, most importantly to determine the potential contribution from the open waters of the Great Lakes for lake effect snow storms.
