Pacific Storm System Impacting the Western U.S.; Critical to Extremely Critical Fire Weather in the Central U.S.

A Pacific storm will move through the western U.S. today and Tuesday with areas of heavy mountain snow, gusty to high winds, and lower elevation rain. A Red Flag Warning has been issued for southeast New Mexico, the Permian Basin, and portions of the Trans Pecos given the combination of relative humidity as low as 6 percent, gusty south to southwest winds, and critical to extreme fire danger.
The combination of extremely low relative humidity (as low as 5 percent), strong westerly winds, and high to extreme fire danger will result in favorable conditions for rapid fire growth and spread over the area Tuesday. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for all of West Texas and Southeast New Mexico for Tuesday afternoon and evening.
Another day of very strong west winds are expected across much of the region on Tuesday. The strongest winds are expected from Southeast New Mexico and much of the Permian Basin south to the Marfa Plateau. Wind gusts may reach as high as 60 mph with even higher gusts in the mountains. Secure outdoor objects before the winds arrive. Be prepared for difficult driving due to strong winds and blowing dust.
