Critical Fire Weather in the Plains; Severe Thunderstorms in the Upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes

Anomalously warm, dry and breezy conditions will bring elevated to critical fire weather conditions across portions of the Intermountain West into the central and southern Plains today. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across portions of the upper Mississippi River Valley to the Great Lakes tonight through the day Tuesday. The severe weather season typically peaks in April and May across the Bluegrass State.  However, 2016 has seen relatively little severe weather.  In fact, the National Weather Service offices that serve Kentucky have only issued 6 tornado warnings and 31 severe thunderstorm warnings in the state.  The 37 total warnings is the fewest number of warnings issued through April 24th of any calendar year since 1996!
