Heavy Rain in the Appalachians and Central Gulf Coast; Heat Continues in the West; Monitoring the Tropics

Heavy to excessive rainfall over the southern Appalachians and portions of the central Gulf Coast may bring areas of flooding today. Hot temperatures are in place through today across much of the western U.S. and New England. Fast Facts:  

Numerous rounds of showers with some embedded storms tracked over northern Illinois and northwest Indiana late Sunday night through Monday.

The atmosphere was very moist resulting in efficient rainfall rates, at times over 1" per hour and very low visibility, and scattered rain totals over 1.50".

As a warm front slowly moved north in the afternoon, some showers and storms exhibited temporary rotation, mainly along and east of I-55.

One such storm produced a brief tornado near Kentland, IN in Newton County.
