Fire Weather Planning Forecast for SW VA...SE WV and NW NC
National Weather Service Blacksburg VA
117 PM EDT Fri Apr 3 2026
.DISCUSSION...
Daytime highs will again climb into the 70s and 80s on Saturday,
which is general is nearly 15-20 degrees above normal for the
region for daytime temperatures. Dewpoints will also remain in
the 50s-60s across the area on Saturday ahead of the approaching
cold front. This will lead to increased instability across the
region during the afternoon hours, and increased minimum RH values
in the 40-50% range through the afternoon hours. Chances for showers and
thunderstorms has increased across mountain locations during the
afternoon and evening hours as a pre-frontal trough pushes through
the region ahead of the aforementioned cold front. These showers
and thunderstorms may lead to gusty and erratic winds in and around
their vicinity.
With the passage of the cold front late Saturday night into Sunday
morning, a cooler and drier airmass will return to the region, with
near seasonal temperatures forecast through much of next week.
Minimum RH values will drop into the 20-30% range each day next
week starting on Monday, with gusty winds on Monday and Tuesday up to
20mph forecast. With gusty winds and low RH values, a few days towards
the early/middle of next week may have some increased fire weather concerns.
More relaxed winds return Wednesday and Thursday leading to more favorable
burning conditions. No rain is expected after the passage of the cold
front Saturday night into Sunday for the foreseeable future.
