.DISCUSSION...
...HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 8 PM EDT TODAY FOR THE
LOWER ELEVATIONS...
...EXTREME HEAT WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM to 8 PM EDT TODAY
FOR PARTS OF SOUTH CENTRAL VIRGINIA AND NORTH CENTRAL NORTH
CAROLINA...
Heat risk increases to hazardous levels this holiday weekend.
Additional advisories/warnings have encompass much of the
region east of the Blue Ridge for the holiday weekend.
The mid-level ridge currently above us will facilitate warming
temperatures with highs in the 80s to lower 90s in the mountains
and upper 90s to around 100 for the foothills and piedmont.
The hot temperatures will combine with elevated dewpoints around
68 to 72 to produce peak heat indices of 95 to 100 in the
mountains and 105 to 115 in the Foothills and Piedmont today
By Sunday, a slight cooling period will commence, with heat
temperatures
in the Mountains expected to be in the low to mid 80s, and
Piedmont locations likely remaining in the mid to upper 90s.
This will mean heat index values will peak in the low 90s
across the mountains, and the low 100s across the Piedmont.
Each day the region looks to cool by a few degrees, which will
bring temperatures back to seasonal values for this time of the
year.
Increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms beginning
today and into next week may cause issues with lightning-
started fires.
