If the power goes out, knowing how to safely use heat sources and knowing how to stay warm can save your life. Never use generators indoors, and avoid candles if possible to avoid fire risk. Also, be sure to check on loved ones and neighbors to make sure they are safe as well.
Behind the winter storm this weekend, brutally cold temperatures are forecast. Windy and cold conditions arrive today, with mountain upslope snow showers. Prepare for possible lengthy power outages, as very cold air stays in place all week. Tuesday morning lows will be in the low single digits to below zero across the area, with below zero wind chills area-wide. West of the Blue Ridge, wind chills will be -10 to -20. Temperatures continue to be dangerously cold, likely staying at or below freezing area-wide for all of next week. Lows each night will be in the single digits to low teens, with another shot of cold air late next week.
