SKYWARN® Spotter Training Schedule

Anyone can attend ANY in-person class (regardless of the county you reside in), or you can register for one or our online streaming classes, if we host one. Unless noted, you do not have to pre-register for an in-person class; simply show up at the location at the date and time listed. For virtual classes, registering in advance for the class is preferred but you can also join at the start time.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service in Shreveport conduct storm spotter training classes from October through November and from January through the end of March the help local residents, trained storm spotters, and first responders prepare for the upcoming severe weather season. The NWS typically conducts the training in partnership with local emergency management officials and amateur radio clubs who, in most cases, are responsible for maintaining their local storm spotter network.

The training sessions are typically about two hours long and cover fundamental information that every spotter needs to know with a focus on safety, identification of key weather features, and proper reporting procedures.

Classes labeled as "NWS SKYWARN - Basic" are online classes that are open to everyone. Registration for these classes if limited to 500 registrants. If a class is full, continue to check back as any cancellations will open additional spots.

All classes are free and open to the public.

SKYWARN certificates are good for two years.
