2024 Student Volunteer Program

NWS-Shreveport is currently seeking one to two student volunteers for Summer 2024!
 
Are you a college student studying atmospheric science and interested in learning what we do at the National Weather Service (NWS)? If the answer is yes, consider volunteering this summer at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Shreveport, LA.
 

This program offers students majoring in meteorology or a related since an opportunity to become familiar with the structure, mission, and duties of the NWS. If selected, you will:

  • Shadow and train on-site with NWS forecasters.
     
  • Develop and complete a research project.
     
  • Receive training in and conduct upper-air observations/weather balloon launches.
     
  • Participate in damage surveys and outreach.
Eligibility Requirements: What Is Need to Apply:
  • Pursuing a degree in meteorology or a related science.
     
  • Current cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.
     
  • Available 15 to 20 hours per week (120 hours total for the summer).
  • Current resume (limit 1 to 2 pages).
     
  • Unofficial college transcript.
     
  • Cover letter outlining interest in the NWS volunteer program.
     
  • Letter(s) of recommendation.
