Showers and Storms in the East; Dangerously Hot and Dry in the West

Scattered showers and storms are expected across portions of the Central and Eastern U.S. through the end of the week. Meanwhile, dangerous heat will intensify across the Desert Southwest and Intermountain West. 1992

Low pressure tracked east across the Upper Great Lakes and Southern Ontario bringing a southerly flow of warm, moist, unstable air to the region. The thunderstorms which developed across the western southern tier not only produced torrential downpours but damaging winds and large hail. Downed trees and power lines and scattered power outages were reported across the area. Wind damage was reported in Little Valley, Humphrey, Ischua, Cuba, Fluvanna, Portville and Bolivar. The heavy rains, up to two inches in one hour, resulted in flash flooding in some places. In Jamestown, the water rose to near one foot deep and left six inches of mud upon receding.

1996

Thunderstorms developed along a convergence line along the south shore of Lake Ontario. The storms continued to redevelop along the same line producing rainfall amounts between three and five inches in less than a three hour period. Street flooding was reported in Medina, Albion, and Sodus. In Albion, 24 basements were flooded while in Medina, 30 basements were flooded. In Chautauqua county, a severe thunderstorm crossed the county during the early afternoon. The thunderstorm was accompanied by very heavy rain and large hail. Several home sustained damage by falling trees and limbs. A small barn was leveled. A large barn sustained major damage as the windward quarter of the barn was ripped off. The pieces of the structure were blown several hundred feet downwind.
