OCTOBER 25
1980 25TH-26TH…A major storm system moved up the Atlantic Coast on the 25th. This storm brought 2 to 3-1/2 inches of rain to western New York. Buffalo and Cayuga creeks swelled to just above flood stage that night. Five people were reported killed in an accident in the Buffalo area during the driving rain. Before ending, the rain changed to flurries and snow squalls as cold air moved into hilly areas near the Pennsylvania border. Three to five inches were reported over parts of Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties by the next morning. Strong winds on the 26th also accompanied the storm. Windspeeds peaked at 56 mph at the Airport with apparent higher gusts near Lake Erie. Some small boats were tossed ashore and damaged in Buffalo Harbor. Waves from Lake Erie washed over the Silver Creek breakwall briefly closing Old Lake Shore Road. 2001 Deep low pressure over Lake Superior tracked slowly east to Quebec. A tight pressure gradient around the low produced strong winds over extreme western New York. The winds downed trees and power lines across the area. In Buffalo, a large falling tree crushed a minivan injuring two occupants. Damage was reported in Buffalo, Lockport, and Royalton.
