Areas of Heavy to Excessive Rainfall Which May Bring Flooding

An area of thunderstorms and heavy rains may produce flash flooding in the central and southern Plains, specifically southeast Kansas, into the morning. Monsoon moisture will continue to produce areas of heavy rainfall and the potential for flooding and debris flows across the northern Intermountain West. Scattered storms are expected to develop along and ahead of a cold front near the Red River Thursday afternoon and evening. A few strong to marginally severe storms are possible with a threat for damaging winds, hail, and locally heavy rain. Thursday will also be the warmest day of the week with highs in the mid to upper 90s and peak heat index values near or slightly above 100 degrees.
Isolated showers and storms (with coverage of 20% or less) are expected to develop across portions of Central Texas this afternoon. Severe weather is not anticipated but brief heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and frequent lightning is possible with any storms that develop. Temperatures will top out in the mid 80s to mid 90s this afternoon with peak heat index values up to 104 degrees possible. Another mild night is expected tonight with lows generally in the low to mid 70s.
Another cold front arriving late Thursday and Friday will bring additional rain chances and cooler air into the region for the weekend. Highs will be several degrees below normal in the 80s with scattered showers and storms through Monday.
