Strong to Severe Storms in the Upper Midwest; Bering Sea Low Continues to Impact Southwest Alaska

Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible Thursday across central and eastern Minnesota, Iowa, and western Wisconsin. A few tornadoes, isolated very large hail, and damaging winds may occur. In southwest Alaska, a Bering Sea low continues to cause strong winds, significant rainfall, and high seas, with further impacts expected Friday into the weekend from a North Pacific storm. Have you ever thought about what your local National Weather Service (NWS) office does? Interested in meeting your local NWS meteorologists? Then come help us celebrate our Open House!

Our office will be open for public tours on Saturday, April 27th, from 10 am until 2 pm. Come take a look inside our operations area, meet the staff, and enjoy a variety of displays from local first responders and core government and private partners. We will also have activities for the kids, so bring them along! The event is FREE!!

Hot dogs and refreshments available for purchase from local Boy Scout troop.

 

*In the event of severe weather, the open house may need to be postponed to May 4th.

**No Smoking

***No pets allowed. Service dogs permitted.

****No drugs, weapons, or alcohol of any kind allowed.

Interpretation services will be available on site for our guests in the deaf and Spanish speaking communities.

  • Tour various emergency vehicles from local fire departments, EMS, and law enforcement
  • Visit with local TV meteorologists and see their storm chase vehicles
  • Walk through exhibits from various local agencies & organizations
  • Learn about weather safety & preparedness
  • Hot dogs and refreshments available for purchase from local Boy Scout troop.
  • Live wire demonstration from Southern Public Power District
  • Demonstrations from Nebraska Mesonet

Directions

We are located 2 miles north of Hastings, just south of the KSNB TV station, along Highway 281. Look for Open House signs.

Directions From I-80:

  1. Take exit 312 (Turn South on Highway 281)
  2. Head south for 12 miles
  3. Turn right at the large KSNB tower (
  4. Turn right and proceed to park on the KSNB grounds (parking attendants will be present to assist)

Directions From Hastings:

  1. Take Highway 281 north for 2 miles.
  2. Turn left at the large KSNB tower.
  3. Turn right and proceed to park on the KSNB grounds (parking attendants will be present to assist)
