Severe Thunderstorms and Excessive Rainfall in the Eastern U.S. Tuesday; Hot Weather for Southern California

Severe thunderstorms are likely across portions of the Mid-South, Tennessee Valley, and lower Ohio River Valley Tuesday, including damaging winds and tornadoes, a few of which could be strong. Heavy to excessive rainfall, which may lead to flooding, is expected over the lower Ohio Valley Tuesday. Peak Winds from Oct 8-9, 2016 Across Southeast Virginia and NE North Carolina

The combination of Hurricane Matthew becoming extra-tropical well south of the area, combined with strong high pressure moving into the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes created strong winds across SE Virginia and NE North Carolina. There were widespread gusts of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts in the Tidewater and NE NC of 50 to 70 mph.
