Risks of Severe Thunderstorms and Excessive Rainfall; Fire Weather Concerns and Record Warmth

Severe thunderstorms and flash flooding risks increase across the center of the nation today. Meanwhile, ongoing thunderstorms and flash flooding will linger along the Gulf Coast states through the evening. ...Warmest combined December & January on record...

December was the warmest on record at both Caribou and Bangor. At
Caribou, the average temperature of 28.5 degrees was 10.3 degrees
above the 30-year average. At Bangor, the average temperature of
34 degrees was 9.4 degrees above average.

It is still preliminary until February 1st, but this January will
end as the 5th warmest on record at Caribou behind only 2006,
1958, 2010, and the all-time warmest January in 1956. At Bangor,
this January will end as the 12th warmest on record.

For the combined December-January it will be the warmest on
record at both Caribou and Bangor by more than 2 degrees,
surpassing the winter of 2001-2002.
