Local Weather History For July 7th...
|
1988: One year to the date, another relatively rare supercell for July was found wreaking havoc on the South Plains. This
supercell moved from Swisher County into Hale County accompanied by winds to 60 mph at Finney and Edmonson. A hangar in Edmonson was destroyed by these winds and several trees nearby were uprooted. Storage buildings on the west side of Plainview were later destroyed by this same storm. As this southward-moving supercell moved into Lubbock County, significant flash flooding developed after up to six inches of rain inundated the area. Flooded fields quickly consumed bar ditches and roads leading to fast-moving currents of water over Highway 84 between Shallowater and Roundup. Several vehicles along this stretch of the highway were swept off the road and one woman was found trapped in her car after four hours. Water had risen to her neck when rescue services discovered her. Also, a family of seven was trapped when their motor home was carried off the road. Within one hour, practically all rural roads were closed in western Lubbock County! Similar devastating rains struck Ropesville where water flowed into several homes and even City Hall. The storms intensity diminished upon reaching Terry County |
