Local Weather History For May 8th...
2015: Extreme instability and strong wind shear supported an intense supercell early this afternoon that tracked from near
Ropesville east to Throckmorton. A swath of significant hail accompanied this prolific storm with giant hail up to
grapefruit size (4.5 inches) at times. Along with the giant hail, destructive RFD winds lofted gravel which inflicted
further damage to many buildings and cars, particularly in Slaton where about $100M in damage occurred. This supercell
later acquired a strong low-level mesocyclone near Spur, but ground observations from spotters and storm chasers indicated
the supercell was elevated by this point following a southward-surging outflow boundary. This stable air likely prevented
what could have been a significant tornado from developing and tracking into Spur.
