Heat Safety Tips

A Heat Advisory is in effect for most areas off the Caprock from 1 PM to 9 PM on Thursday. Temperatures as high as 106 degrees are expected.

Thursday temperatures will range from 100 to 106 degrees across the forecast area, with the hottest conditions again expected off the Caprock.

After a mostly dry overnight, Friday sees higher storm chances for areas on the Caprock, especially by the evening. The weekend looks mostly dry and not as hot with only slight storm chances on Saturday near the TX-NM border.

Practice heat safety wherever you are. NEVER leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.

Local Weather History For July 30th...

1979: Early this evening, an impressive, yet slow-moving thunderstorm dropped copious amounts of pea to 1/2 inch hail in a
path extending from seven miles north of Friona to just west of Friona. The width of the hailswath varied from near one
mile on the north end to two miles on the south end. Over three inches of rain caused the thick accumulations of hail to
pile up into drifts three feet deep in places leaving roads glazed with ice. A large number of rabbits and pheasant were
killed by hail driven along by strong winds. Over 300 acres of sugar beets and cotton were wiped out with an additional
100 acres suffering various degrees of damage. Tragically, a separate strong thunderstorm developed near Plainview around
this time catching a family off guard from La Fina. This family had been picking cucumbers and attempted to outrun the
storm in their pickup truck. Four miles east of Plainview, the truck was struck by lightning killing the father and two
sons who were riding in the open bed of the truck. A third son riding with them was injured but recovered. The mother and
two sons riding the cab were not hurt.
