Local Weather History For May 20th...
|
1977: After three straight days of severe storms, portions of the South Plains experienced their fourth round of intense
thunderstorms...this time during the mid-to-late morning hours. Around 9:40 AM, funnel clouds were reported near Needmore and Lehman. By 10 AM, one of these storms produced baseball size hail just southwest of Morton causing damage to young crops. Another storm farther south produced a brief tornado near Tokio, however the most significant event of the morning was a tornado that developed three miles west of Levelland at 10:55 AM. This tornado derailed seven Sante Fe freight cars, damaged two homes and one mobile home and resulted in about $75,000 worth of combined damage. By early afternoon, some of these storms continued farther east producing a brief tornado near Cotton Center and baseball size hail in Plainview. Extensive crop damage and local street flooding was observed throughout the Plainview area. Shortly prior to 2 PM, a tornado struck just east of Silverton causing extensive damage to a cotton gin. Two warehouses, a scale house and a large equipment shed were destroyed. Thankfully, no injuries were reported with any of the storms this day. |
