Local Weather History For December 6th...
1960 (6th-10th): Multiple rounds of snow, at times heavy, accumulated to as much as 13 inches in parts of Yoakum County
ahead of a slow-moving winter storm. As the storm system drew closer, the layer of cold air aloft was replaced by warmer
air resulting in a fierce ice storm that isolated many rural residents of West Texas, particularly in the Trans-Pecos
where ice accumulated to circumferences of 4.5 inches on tree limbs. Many exposed surfaces were covered in nearly two
inches of ice! In the vicinity of Plains, between 400 and 800 power poles were snapped resulting in up to $10,000 of
damage. About 1,000 power poles were toppled in Bailey County. Archived records revealed conditions were quite windy
during the ice storm resulting in even greater stress on outdoor structures.
