Heavy Rainfall Continues in Hawaii; Severe Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall in the Plains and Southern Appalachians

Heatwave Continues

Symptoms of Overheating

Dangerous heating confined to southern Oklahoma and and western north Texas on Monday afternoon with triple digit high temperatures up to 106 degrees and heat indices up to 110 degrees. A Heat Advisory will be in effect across our south this afternoon until sundown.

There is a marginal risk for severe storms this afternoon and evening across portions of Oklahoma. The primary severe hazard with these storms will be damaging wind gusts with up to quarter size hail possible.

Showers & thunderstorms are possible through mid-morning with a brief lull during the early afternoon before returning mid/late-afternoon into the evening. Strong to severe damaging winds will be possible with some of these storms in the afternoon.

Fire weather conditions will increase to an Elevated Risk on Tuesday & Wednesday afternoon across western Oklahoma and western north Texas due to very dry air over very dry vegetation, hot conditions and breezy southwest winds.

Above normal temperatures will persist through the week with only areas north of I-40 feeling slight relief from the heatwave on Monday while it persists across areas to the south. However the heat wave returns to areas north of I-40 on Tuesday with triple digit highs returning there. Another summer cold front expected to come through on Thursday which could bring another day of slight relief from the heat at the end of the week for at least areas north of I-40.

Local Weather History For August 17th...

One of the most memorable severe thunderstorms in recent history
struck north-central and central Oklahoma on August 17, 1994. The
communities of Lahoma and Drummond suffered the most damage from an
unusually intense supercell storm, that moved south into Oklahoma
near Manchester, and continued across Goltry, Lahoma, Drummond,
Kingfisher, and Okarche. Widespread severe damage occurred to between
500 and 800 permanent homes and businesses, and between 80 and 120
mobile homes, all the result of very large hail driven by
hurricane-force winds. Peak wind gusts in Lahoma were measured at 113
mph, before the wind equipment gave out. Hail reached golf ball to
baseball size along the entire storm track. One hailstone that fell
between Kingfisher and Okarche was said to look like a football.
Several people were treated for hypothermia in the Lahoma area as a
result of the large volume of hail, as air temperatures fell from
near 100 degrees, down into the lower 50s.
