Severe Thunderstorms, Excessive Rain and Heat Hazards

A Moderate Risk of severe thunderstorms (level 4 of 5) is in the outlook across portions of the Midwest today. Damaging winds, a few tornadoes and frequent lightning with heavy rainfall are in the forecast. Meanwhile, dangerous heat across the southern Plains into the Great Lakes, mid-Atlantic and Northeast will expand into Friday. Risk for wildfires for the central Rockies and Sacramento Valley. Scattered severe thunderstorms are expected along a front beginning Thursday afternoon and continuing into Thursday night. Damaging wind gusts and large hail will be the main severe weather hazards.
Severe thunderstorms will be possible along a cold front across central into southwest Oklahoma likely by 5 PM then into western north Texas around 10 PM
Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms may lead to flooding concerns across the area through the weekend. Rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches, with locally higher amounts are possible.
There is a marginal risk of severe storms on Saturday from late afternoon through the evening. Large hail and damaging winds will be possible.
Hot and humid conditions are expected again Thursday, with triple-digit heat indices in the afternoon. Scattered shower and storm chances continue each day.

On the late evening of June 11, 2004, a heat-burst occurred over
Wichita Falls, which produced a brief, but sudden, severe wind gust.
Sheppard Air Force Base measured the gust at 64 mph.
