A multi-day thunderstorm and heavy rain event will impact the south-central U.S. this Memorial Day weekend. Severe thunderstorms may produce large hail, severe gusts, and a possible tornado or two across portions of the central and southern Plains through Monday. One of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in Oklahoma history occurred
on this date back in 1955. Several tornadoes occurred across western, central, and northern Oklahoma. The most devastating tornado formed just north of Oklahoma City, and moved northward, striking the town of Blackwell. Twenty people were killed and 280 were injured as the tornado destroyed eastern portions of the town. Another tornado formed just northeast of Blackwell and moved into Kansas, killing 80 people and injuring over 270 in and near the town of Udall. |
