American Samoa, a group of islands in the mid-South Pacific, is located 2300 miles south-southwest of Honolulu. American Samoa has a land area of 76 square miles and approximately 68,688 residents (est. 2002), most of whom live on the island of Tutuila. Since American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the United States, its citizens are U.S. nationals who are able to freely enter the United States. The territory has an important tuna processing industry and its capital, Pago Pago, has a great natural harbor with dry dock and port facilities. The government is the biggest employer in American Samoa. Information adapted from Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL). |
