Significant Severe Weather, Dangerous Heat and Extremely Critical Fire Weather Conditions Across the Southern U.S.

Tornadoes (some strong), extreme hail, and widespread wind damage are forecast over parts of the central and southern Plains Saturday afternoon through Saturday night. A Moderate Risk (level 4 of 5) for severe storms has been issued. Strong winds and low relative humidity will contribute to extremely critical fire weather Saturday in the Southwest. Dangerous heat continues in South Texas. Read More >

Overview

A deepening area of low pressure moved from the Upper Midwest, through the Great Lakes, and into southern Ontario on November 15, 2020. Ahead of this intense low, a warm front lifted through the mid-Atlantic during the late morning and early afternoon hours. Strong southerly flow developed over the region during the afternoon and evening, in the gradient between the low pressure to the northwest and an offshore high pressure center. This resulted in an unseasonably warm day for November with most areas achieving high temperatures in the low to mid 60s and dew point values also approaching 60F. This caused a small amount (no more than 100 to 200J/kg) of MLCAPE to develop. Meanwhile, extreme wind fields were present with 0 to 6km shear of 90 to 110 kt. This exceptional shear combined with strong lift from an approaching cold front and the small amount of instability caused a squall line to develop immediately ahead of the cold front. The line was narrow and low-topped and produced little lightning, typical of strongly forced, high shear, low CAPE environments such as this one. However, the intense low level wind fields caused this squall line to become a widespread wind damage producer. Ahead of the line, non-convective winds associated with the strong gradient were already gusting over 40 mph in some areas and producing sporadic minor damage. Along the squall line, many locations saw wind gusts of 55 to 65 mph, producing more widespread tree and utility damage. A couple areas of enhanced damage also occurred, likely associated with rear-flank downdraft surges from multiple small-scale circulations which developed along the line. No evidence of tornadic damage was found. Thankfully, no injuries were attributed to this event.

...Summary...
An NWS storm survey was conducted on a severe straight-line wind
event which occurred on Sunday evening in Maxatawny Township in
Berks County PA about 4 miles ENE of Kutztown. A severe surge of
winds began along Kunkel Road where substantial damage occurred
to a single family home and the surrounding property. Several
trees were snapped or uprooted and yard toys were tossed up to 200
yards away from the property. The winds partially lifted the
front porch roof, but did not completely blow it off the house.
The winds swept across nearby fields and struck a large barn,
uprooting and snapping a few more trees along the way. The barn
was almost completely destroyed, suffering outer wall collapse and
partial roof removal. A few trees around the barn were also
uprooted or snapped and a nearby shed was tossed off its
foundation and completely destroyed. Some minor cosmetic damage
occurred to the adjacent farm home. Nearby fields were strewn with
tree and structural debris as well as debris from the yard toys.

The winds continued across a rural area for about another 1.5
miles sweeping across fields and snapping trees along the way.
Most notably, a line of trees near Grim Road over 100 yards in
width were all snapped. Some unharvested, dead corn fields along
Albright Road suffered large swaths of blown over corn stalks. A
home near the downed field of corn stalks suffered some minor
cosmetic damage. The surge of winds ended near a farm on Route
863 where a barn roof was partially removed and a tree was
snapped.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly NJ would like to thank
the Berks County Emergency Management, the Kutztown Fire
Department, and local Skywarn Coordinators for their assistance
with this survey.

* The information in this statement is preliminary and subject to
change pending final review of the event and publication in NWS
Storm Data.

Radar Interrogation

Notable Radar Imagery (GR2Analyst and AWIPS)

Environment Environment
Figure 1: KDIX radar reflectivity factor (left) and storm relative velocity (SRM, right) for the 0.5 degree elevation angle valid from 2341 to 2355 UTC 15 November 2020. This was the approximate time of the wind damage event in Maxatawny Twp, just northeast of Kutztown. Unfortunately, radar beam height in that area is over 7000 feet, and given the low-topped nature of this squall line, important lower level features are being missed. In addition, velocity data suffered from serious range folding at times. A weak velocity couplet is evident, indicating some rotation. However, storm survey results indicated damage consistent with straight line winds. It can be conjectured that a circulation likely attempted to develop, but “gusted out” as the rear flank downdraft surged ahead of it. Reflectivity data also shows a “break” in the line where the damage occurred, which is often characteristic of these events. This pattern was observed multiple times as storms moved closer to the radar where viewing was better. It was likely this downdraft surge caused the damage, with poor construction a contributing factor to the severe structural damage one building received. Figure 2: TPHL radar reflectivity factor loop for the 0.4 degree elevation angle valid from 0119 to 0133 UTC 16 November 2020. Note the rapid formation of a hook echo just south of Lumberton, New Jersey. This was associated with a mesovortex which developed within the line. In QLCS events such as this, these signatures are often associated with locally enhanced wind damage, and can sometimes spawn brief tornadoes, though none were found to have occurred in this event.
Environment Environment
Figure 3: TPHL storm relative velocity loop for the 0.4 degree elevation angle for the same period as Figure 2. A rather strong velocity couplet is observed rapidly developing in the area of the hook echo mentioned above near Lumberton. As quickly as it forms, the couplet gusts out as it approaches Pemberton. Figure 4: Same as Figure 1 valid from 0212 to 0227 UTC 16 November 2020. Multiple additional mesovortex circulations developed along the squall line as it moved towards the coast. In this loop alone, at least 4 brief but well-defined mesovorticies are seen in the velocity data, and are also associated with small nubs in the reflectivity data. An area of enhanced damage was observed in Mayetta, New Jersey, just south of Manahawkin, where one of these features passed by. Once again, it appeared to be straight line wind damage as the fleeting circulation gusted out. Other circulations are seen near Beach Haven and near Barnegat.
Environment Environment
Figure 5: KDIX radar reflectivity factor (left) and base velocity (V, right) for the 0.5 degree elevation angle valid 0220 UTC 16 November 2020. The squall line continued to produce wind damage all the way to the New Jersey coast. In fact, some pockets of more widespread damage were reported in southern Monmouth and northern Ocean Counties in New Jersey. A 63 mph wind gust was measured in Brick, NJ, and several trees were downed in Neptune Twp. At least one house there sustained heavy damage from a falling tree. Multiple other 55 to 65 mph gusts were measured along the coast. In areas where allowed by KDIX’s viewing angle (such as coastal Atlantic and Cape May Counties and offshore of Monmouth County), V values of 55 to 70 kt are detected at around 3000 ft above the surface, indicative of the strong low level jet in place.. Figure 6: Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor (MRMS) rainfall estimates for the 12 hour period ending at 0500 UTC 16 November 2020. Flooding was not a significant factor with this system, with rainfall totals generally on either side of 0.50 inches. However, most of that rain fell within half an hour in association with the squall line. High winds during the day caused many leaves to drop in the waning foliage season. This led to leaf-clogged drains and some nuisance roadway flooding.
