Critical fire weather conditions, severe thunderstorms capable of producing severe wind gusts, large hail, strong tornadoes and heavy rainfall remain on tap for the central U.S. this evening. A wave of low pressure developed near the North Carolina Outer Banks early on February 7, 2021. The low gradually strengthened in the presence of favorable jet dynamics, and moved quickly northeastward over the course of the day, tracking a couple hundred miles east of the mid-Atlantic coast. Precipitation overspread the region during the early morning hours, and had already departed by mid-afternoon. Temperatures were generally cold enough to support precipitation falling as snow, though areas close to the coast saw mixed rain and snow. Meteorologically, the event was notable for having pronounced banding features. In particular, a heavy band of snow produced 6 to 10 inches of snow in just a few hours over southeast Pennsylvania and central and northern New Jersey. Most other parts of the area saw measurable snow, but with lesser amounts. No other hazards (such as high winds or coastal flooding) were present in association with this quick hitting storm. This event came less than a week after the conclusion of a major winter storm which had brought a widespread 12 -24+ inches of snow to central and northern portions of the local area, part of an active stretch of winter weather which continued into mid-February.
