Record Breaking Temperatures and Critical Fire Weather

More than 200 record or near record maximum temperatures are forecast across the southern half of the U.S. through the end of this week before additional record temperatures center back over the Southwest U.S. into the Rockies this weekend. Why does this table begin in September 2025?

Our 2025 rainy season came to an early end during September across much of West Central and Southwest Florida with rainfall amounts less than 50% of normal along the coastal counties from Levy south through Sarasota. These dry conditions have continued thanks in large part to the La Niña ENSO pattern.

Across the Florida peninsula the fall into spring timeframe is considered our dry season, and with rainfall amounts rather low as we move into spring, then the Florida fire season, which typically runs from March until the beginning of the rainy season in late May or early June, can be influenced with fires able to spread faster and further. For this reason burn bans are already in effect for most of West Central and Southwest Florida as seen below.
