Overview and Science

Thunderstorms became well-organized across eastern Iowa by the late morning on August 4th, and would further strengthen into a long-lasting mesoscale convective complex (MCS) that would accelerate eastward through northern Illinois in the afternoon and northern Indiana during the evening.

Climatology favors the prime time for severe thunderstorm development being the mid-afternoon into the evening hours, while the morning tends to see a minimum of severe activity.  The area of storms on the 4th however strengthened during the late morning and early afternoon, being driven by a parent, fast-moving circulation in the mid-levels (10,000-20,000 ft).  This can be seen on the early morning water vapor imagery to the right across southeast Nebraska and northeast Kansas, with the red specks indicating lightning strikes in storms developing in advance of the disturbance.  This wave was associated with stronger mid-level winds, which has been shown to be a key ingredient in long duration thunderstorm complexes.  Below in Fig. 1 is a depiction of these stronger winds at 500 mb.  The winds allowed for a substantial increase in deep layer shear, as seen in Fig. 2. This is another key ingredient for thunderstorm organization in any mode, especially large scale complexes.  Deep layer shear by 10 am was 40-50 kt within and immediately ahead of the storm complex, which was a marked increase from just a few hours prior.

At the surface, southerly winds had allowed warmth and moisture to be advected north into central and northern Illinois.  This had pooled along a warm-frontal boundary from northwest Illinois into east central Illinois, illustrated in Fig. 3 with the very high values of surface theta-e (combination of temperature and moisture).   A very unstable and uncapped pre-storm environment was the response, as shown in the Fig. 4 plot of instability.  With the mixing and instability being surface-based, this also was a sign strong winds reaching ground level would be probable.

The warmth and moisture ahead of the storms was being continuously advected into the ongoing complex.  This was already apparent by 10 am on the storm-relative inflow graphic seen in Fig. 5.

Several of these parameters, namely mid and upper level winds, deep layer shear, and instability are combined into a term called Probability of MCS Maintenance, which is shown in Fig. 6.  This was derived from research done in the past decade by multiple scientists on hundreds of these storm complexes.  Note the 60% probabilities at that hour in advance of the ongoing storm complex  which helped increase meteorologists' confidence that this would evolve eastward and likely gain in intensity.

2:15 pm GOES Visible Satellite Image
Visible Satellite Image
This visible satellite image depicts the well-organized thunderstorm complex by the bright, enhanced colder cloud tops.  Individual cloud tops can be seen by the bumpy structure, and these cloud tops were 45,000 ft +.  There was also ideal mass evacuation aloft depicted in part on this image by the clockwise-turn of the highest, outer periphery clouds, something often needed for a complex to persist for many hours.

Lightning was extremely frequent within this thunderstorm complex, with hourly rates of cloud-to-ground strikes over 10,000 during peak intensity.
