Widespread strong thunderstorms with damaging winds and locally heavy rain are expected across portions of the Ohio Valley into southern Mid-Atlantic and Carolinas. Rounds of strong thunderstorms are expected to develop across the northern and central Plains. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible today across the Panhandles, with the best chances being before sunset. Brief moderate to heavy rain can be expected with any thunderstorm, and there will also be a potential for strong wind gusts. Shower and thunderstorm chances will decrease through the evening.

While triple digit heat is not expected to be as widespread this week compared to previous weeks, above average temperatures will continue during the afternoon. Most locations in the combined Panhandles will be in the 90s, with a higher chance of 100s across the east.

While most of the next work week looks to be hot and dry, as we approach the weekend we may see the weather pattern shift across the US. Currently, there is a good chance (75%) that the upper-level high pressure system that has been staying over the Plains will shift either to the east or west, but the more favored shift is to the west. This could cause rain chances to return to the Panhandles. However, there is still plenty of time for details to change, and there's still a low chance that the high pressure will simply remain over the Plains. Stay tuned.

The month of August also wrapped up on warmer and drier than normal. Amarillo and Dalhart both had 18 days of highs at or above 100 degrees. Meanwhile Guymon had 21 days and Borger had 25 days at or above 100 for the whole month! Additionally, Dalhart had a few days of missing precipitation data last month. So, 0.26" is what was recorded despite the site likely receiving a higher amount.
