Areas of Severe Thunderstorms and Excessive Rainfall Friday

Scattered severe thunderstorms capable of large to very large hail, damaging winds with potentially significant gusts, and perhaps a couple of tornadoes are expected Friday afternoon into night across portions of the central Plains into upper Great Lakes. The first widespread accumulating snow event of several inches for the winter season occurred on New Year's Day of 2022. This page houses snowfall totals from the event, as well as some insight on why snowfall totals in some places were in the lower end of the forecast range or even below it.
