Overview

An early season lake effect snow event brought locally significant snow accumulations (as high as about 1 foot) to portions of northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana.

The peak of the lake effect snow event took place between the late evening of Sunday, November 9 and the early afternoon of Monday, November 10. Prior to the arrival of the more intense lake effect snow bands, light snow accumulations (partially produced by an initial band of lake effect snow) were observed during the morning of November 9.

Snowfall rates in excess of 2 inches per hour accompanied the most intense snow bands, particularly across portions of Lake and Porter counties in Indiana and Kankakee and Lake counties in Illinois.

There were several reports of thundersnow near Lake Michigan during the early morning hours of Monday, November 10.

An unexpected separation between the two primary bands of intense lake effect snow resulted in a local minima in snowfall over Chicago and adjacent suburbs.
