Gusty Winds in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast; Atmospheric River to Impact the Northwest

Gusty winds are expected from portions of the Mid-Atlantic into the Northeast through the night following the system that brought rain to the area. Does this impact warning services?

Our ability in the NWS to issue weather warnings will not be affected. Radar coverage remains strong across northern Illinois and far northwest Indiana due to available of surrounding radars in Milwaukee (KMKX), Davenport (KDVN), Lincoln (KILX), Indianapolis (KIND), Northern Indiana (KIWX), and Grand Rapids (KGRR). In addition, the Chicagoland area has two FAA Terminal Doppler Weather Radars at O'Hare (TORD) and Midway (TMDW) Airports, as well as an additional location near Milwaukee's Mitchell Airport (TMKE). The National Weather Service uses all available radars, satellite data, high-resolution weather models, and weather observation stations during any weather event. We also rely on trained spotters to report significant weather to our office.

Does this change what I should do?

No. It is important to always be aware of the forecast and the weather near you, especially with outdoor plans. If thunderstorms approach, move indoors quickly and be prepared to do so in advance. Have multiple ways to receive a weather warning. If a warning is issued for your area, move quickly to shelter.
