1980: A prolific and long-lived cyclic tornadic supercell tracked northeastward from near Portales, NM at 3:30 PM into the
southern TX Panhandle before dissipating shortly after midnight. A total of seven tornadoes occurred once this supercell made an abrupt right turn to the east in the southern Panhandle, essentially paralleling HWY 86. Exceptionally rare and gigantic hail reported to be as large as cantaloupes accompanied this significant storm as it moved through Castro County. Dimmitt suffered widespread damage from very large hail with almost every roof in the city damaged. Vehicle damage alone in the city reached a staggering $3 million with $2 million estimated to area homes. About 30 minutes before the massive hail, the storm began producing tornadoes around 6:15 PM about 14 miles WSW of Dimmitt. The second tornado caused numerous instances of mostly minor damage to area homes near Nazareth with farm buildings and implements also damaged or destroyed. One man, attempting to escape the giant tornado (at times up to 2 miles wide) in his truck was lifted off the ground and nearly overturned. Amazingly, he escaped with no injuries. The third tornado was described as massive in size, approximately up to 1.25 miles in width as it tracked towards Lakeview where it destroyed a grain elevator and gin. At one location, 59 cotton trailers were stacked in a pile over 30 feet high. The next tornado was also massive in width, but dissipated before reaching the city of Tulia. However, the next tornado developed directly over Tulias town square around 8 PM and caused mostly minor to moderate instances of building damage. This tornado was described as unusual in that it developed as a rope tornado and remained this way for the remainder of its life as it exited northeast of Tulia. Total damages in Tulia alone exceeded $1M. As the Tulia tornado dissipated |
