1976 (28th-29th): An unprecedented early season snowfall occurred over portions of West Texas Thursday and Friday October
28th and 29th and 1976. This is the first time a significant snowfall had been recorded in this region in October. The snow occurred roughly to the north of a Hobbs, NM to Lubbock to Perryton line and also in the mountains of southwest Texas. Due to temperatures near or slightly above freezing at the time of the snow and warm ground temperatures, most accumulations were held to between two and four inches due to continuous melting. Steady snow rates however still left snow depths of around one inch by the time the snow stopped mid-afternoon on the 29th. This caused numerous minor traffic accidents. Although Lubbock Airport reported a 2-day storm total snowfall of 7.5 inches, the rapid melting kept instantaneous snow depths between 1 and 2 inches throughout the course of the 2-day storm. |
