A band of heavy lake effect snow is expected to develop later today and persist through Monday, primarily affecting areas north of I-80. Localized heavy snowfall amounts are expected with the snow band. Up to 10 inches of snow could occur in some areas. The heaviest snow is forecast to fall overnight tonight through Monday morning, creating the potential for hazardous travel conditions, especially during the Monday morning commute. Snowfall totals of up to 12 inches are possible within the most persistent and narrow band. However, significant uncertainty remains regarding the band's exact location. A small shift to the east or west will result in a sharp gradient in snow totals, with some locations receiving heavy snow while nearby areas see very little.
The official NOAA winter outlook has low predictability in whether precipitation or temperatures will fall above average, near-normal, or below average, though the character of what this means varies locally.
