Frigid Airmass to Bring Significantly Colder Temperatures; Heavy Lake-effect Snow; Fire Concerns Across the Central Gulf Coast

A frigid cold airmass will bring significantly colder weather across the eastern two thirds of the country early this week. Temperatures will tie or break many records across the Southeast through tonight. Moderate to heavy lake effect snow will continue downwind of the Great Lakes. Overview

Memorial Day thunderstorms produced widespread large hail and wind damage across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.  There were five brief EF-0 tornadoes confirmed. See this Public Information Statement for the details. 

In addition to the severe weather, heavy rainfall and flooding were reported in many locations.  With the 1.92" of rain recorded at Chicago O'Hare, this set a daily record for precipitation for May 27th, as well as making it the wettest Memorial Day on record.
